He fought against it at first but then succumbed – the call to teaching proved too strong for Matthew Titmanis and he is now an integral part of Ashdale Secondary College’s science focus.

He graduated from university with a combined Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Bachelor of Commerce/Economics but soon went back to study teaching.

“I’ve always been drawn to education. It’s something I’ve fought against for a while – my mother being a principal and my father an executive director in central office – so I wasn’t interested in teaching to begin with,” he admits wryly.

“After university I worked with Scitech’s outreach programs and visited schools across the State. Being in that role, and teaching science in fun and interactive ways, really inspired me to go back and study education. It’s the best decision I made.”.

Principal Carol Strauss describes Matthew as a life-long learner: “He updates his knowledge base constantly on topics including astronomy, particle physics and psychology – and can always provide students with high level analytical thinking strategies,” she says.

He has also developed a new teaching strategy that turns the classroom into a computer game to help students learn. Tests and assignments become ‘quests’ for which students are awarded points that allow them to ‘level up’ as well as work towards unlocking achievements and buying rewards.

“As Ashdale is a new school, I’ve been given some control and influence in the science department, which isn’t usual for a graduate teacher. It means I can design programs that best suit my students,” Matthew says.
